STATE OF NEW YORK
EXECUTIVE CHAMBER
Proclamation
Whereas, throughout its history, New York State has welcomed people of every national and ethnic background, and we appreciate the contributions made by our many citizens of Latino heritage, including those of Colombian ancestry who share the honored values and traditions of their homeland and who uphold the principles of freedom and democracy that are fundamental to life in America; and
Whereas, we proudly join with the Colombian American community to recognize and commemorate the 198th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Colombia and acknowledge this meaningful event in its history; and
Whereas, throughout the month of July, Colombian American communities across New York State gather to celebrate their culture, pride and accomplishments by hosting appropriate events and activities; and
Whereas, New York State is home to a thriving Colombian American population that is an important component of its social and cultural life, and this community continues to grow and succeed in many areas including the arts, education, industry, science and public service; and
Whereas, this annual celebration commemorates the rich legacy of Colombian Americans and pays tribute to their heritage and history, and the achieved independence of the homeland which followed Simon Bolívar’s victory over the Spanish at Boyaca in 1810, and as this event serves to unite the Americas and people of all backgrounds, we extend our appreciation to the entire Colombian American community; and
Whereas, it is fitting that New Yorkers join in the spirit of this cultural celebration as the Colombian American community commemorates a significant milestone in the history of their homeland, and we take this opportunity to congratulate our friends of Colombian heritage as they observe this proud occasion;
Now, Therefore, I, David A. Paterson, Governor of the State of New York, do hereby proclaim July 2009 as
COLOMBIAN HERITAGE MONTH MES DE LA HERENCIA COLOMBIANA
in the Empire State.
